HOUSTON – Late in the morning on Wednesday, June 10, an 18-wheeler driving westbound on I-10 nearly took out an overpass near Sealy. Traffic was severely affected – a trip that usually took around an hour took drivers close to four hours.
According to DPS investigators, this isn’t the first time that someone has hit a column at the overpass, but prior incidents hadn’t lead to the same amount of damage. TxDOT had to shut traffic down in both directions for several hours, with the freeway finally being reopened early Thursday morning.
TxDOT reports that the overpass will be closed to traffic until permanent repairs can be made, but there’s no definite time as to when that will be completed.
There’s been no word yet from investigators on what caused the driver to crash. He was airlifted to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
