According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a death occurs every 52 minutes as a result of drunk driving – that’s 28 deaths every day that could have absolutely been prevented.
The Center for Disease Control reports that the average drunk driver has driven drunk 80 times before their first arrest. With this statistic in mind and noting the time of the aforementioned accident, one has to wonder if the at-fault driver was leaving from a bar. TABC states that selling an alcoholic beverage with criminal negligence to an intoxicated person is punishable by a fine between $100-$500 and/or a year in jail. Employees in the food service industry must obtain a TABC permit, where these rules are clearly stated. So if the at-fault driver did in fact leave from a bar, why didn’t the bartender stop serving alcohol?
