KILLEEN – A soldier was killed after his motorcycle was rear-ended on Monday, September 7.
Thomas James Reyes, 28, was struck from behind by a white Mustang near Monte Carlo and MLK Blvd around 1am.
Reyes was transported to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition. He died from his injuries around 2am.
Sgt. Reyes, whose home of record is Bronx, New York, entered active-duty military service in April 2007 as a combat engineer. He was assigned to 3rd Combat Engineer Company, Regimental Engineer Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, since February.
Reyes deployed in support of Afghanistan operations from December 2008 to December 2009, from March 2011 to March 2012 and from June 2014 to February 2015.
Reyes’s awards and decorations include the four Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and the NATO Medal (KCEN).
The driver of the Mustang fled from the scene, but was quickly found by authorities. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the collision. Charges are pending.
