While seemingly common sense, drunk driving remains an epidemic among drivers. It’s never worth it. Not only are you putting yourself and others at risk, a first-time DUI/DWI conviction typically results in severe penalties. Even a first offense can result in:
- Temporary impounding of your vehicle
- A fine of up to several thousand dollars
- Installation of an ignition lock that prevents your car from starting if you’ve been drinking
- Possible jail time
- Revocation of your driver’s license
- Community service
- Completion of substance abuse classes at your own expense
These penalties increase substantially if you are involved in an accident or you are a repeat offender. You will also be saddled with a criminal record that may haunt you for years or even decades.
That’s just if you get caught. The consequences of drinking and driving become much more serious when injuries and/or fatalities occur. Always have a reliable way to get home. Have a designated driver, hail a taxi, or use Uber or Lyft to get you home safely.
